<strong>Catalogue</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Inscribed</strong> <strong>Shabtis</strong> <strong>in</strong> Birm<strong>in</strong>gham <strong>Museum</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Gallery</strong><br />

Whitish faience, orig<strong>in</strong>ally green, brown<strong>in</strong>g on back <strong>of</strong> head <strong>and</strong><br />

shoulders.<br />

Well preserved.<br />

Well modelled though proportions somewhat elongated. H<strong>and</strong>s crossed<br />

right over left. Top <strong>of</strong> right sleeve only <strong>in</strong>dicated.<br />

Left h<strong>and</strong> holds pick without cross-bar, right h<strong>and</strong> a hoe. Wears short<br />

straight beard with fe<strong>in</strong>t traces <strong>of</strong> impressed hatch<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> pla<strong>in</strong> lappet<br />

wig, longer at back than front; no horizontal b<strong>and</strong>s. Tall square-hatched<br />

trapezoidal basket over left shoulder on a s<strong>in</strong>gle cord.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>gle column <strong>of</strong> impressed text down front, borders at sides <strong>and</strong> top.<br />

Green faience.<br />

Broken <strong>in</strong>to two pieces across lower legs. Some brown spott<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

places.<br />

Well modelled, <strong>and</strong> features clear. Arms crossed right over left<br />

beneath b<strong>and</strong>ages, <strong>and</strong> only h<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> sleeves show<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Wears long curved plaited beard with herr<strong>in</strong>gbone hatch<strong>in</strong>g; pla<strong>in</strong><br />

lappet wig. Holds pick without cross-bar <strong>in</strong> left h<strong>and</strong>; narrow hoe<br />

<strong>and</strong> basket cord <strong>in</strong> right. Trapezoidal bag with square hatch<strong>in</strong>g<br />

over left shoulder.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>gle column <strong>of</strong> impressed text down front, borders to top <strong>and</strong><br />

sides.<br />
