Ch<strong>in</strong>a means mak<strong>in</strong>g someone accept communist ideology and be will<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to obey the orders <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Communist</strong> Party, at no matter what price.<br />

The methods employed to that end are totally <strong>in</strong>human:<br />

Prisoners <strong>in</strong> the camp work on average 10 hours a day at mak<strong>in</strong>g and carry<strong>in</strong>g<br />

bricks, cutt<strong>in</strong>g and transport<strong>in</strong>g stones, and agricultural work. They are<br />

punished severely if they do not go to bed or get up on time, if they talk to each<br />

other, if they s<strong>in</strong>g songs or shout, laugh or cry, if they secretly take water to<br />

wash themselves for prayer, if they do not f<strong>in</strong>ish their allotted tasks, or if they<br />

answer back to the police or guards. The punishments <strong>in</strong>clude be<strong>in</strong>g hit on<br />

the head, stomach and crutch with electric batons; be<strong>in</strong>g made to lie down<br />

and hav<strong>in</strong>g their hand trodden on; be<strong>in</strong>g made to stand <strong>in</strong> the "fly<strong>in</strong>g aeroplane"<br />

position; be<strong>in</strong>g strapped to a pole and beaten, and be<strong>in</strong>g hung from<br />

the ceil<strong>in</strong>g and beaten. On several occasions, police <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>in</strong>serted an electric<br />

baton <strong>in</strong>to a prisoner's anus. Many prisoners have lost their teeth, have<br />

bleed<strong>in</strong>g ears, broken arms, <strong>in</strong>fected and useless testicles due to torture. They<br />

are frequently <strong>in</strong>sulted and humiliated by the guards. At mealtime, they have<br />

to s<strong>in</strong>g songs <strong>of</strong> praise <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese, fail<strong>in</strong>g which they reportedly go without<br />

food. The camp has no doctor. Prisoners who are sick have to work or are<br />

given no food, and only those who are <strong>in</strong>cont<strong>in</strong>ent are taken to the hospital 36<br />
