CHINA IS NOT ABANDONING COMMUNISM<br />

Mao's successor, Deng Xiaop<strong>in</strong>g, resorted to several economic reforms<br />

<strong>in</strong> an attempt to stabilize the economy. These, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

adaptation <strong>of</strong> some free market pr<strong>in</strong>ciples to communism, partly re<strong>in</strong>vigorated<br />

the Ch<strong>in</strong>ese economy. Today, as a result <strong>of</strong> those reforms,<br />

Western companies are able to <strong>in</strong>vest <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a and private companies<br />

However, Deputy Health<br />

M<strong>in</strong>ister Y<strong>in</strong> Dakui was<br />

forced to publicly admit<br />

that there was a serious<br />

AIDS problem <strong>in</strong> the<br />

country at a press conference<br />

<strong>in</strong> August, 2001.<br />

In his announcement,<br />

Y<strong>in</strong> stated that there<br />

had been a 67 percent<br />

rise <strong>in</strong> the number <strong>of</strong><br />

cases <strong>in</strong> one year, and<br />

that the sale <strong>of</strong> blood<br />

had played an important<br />

part <strong>in</strong> this. Accord<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to a statement by UN-<br />

AIDS, the number <strong>of</strong><br />

AIDS sufferers <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a<br />

will reach 20 million by<br />

2010.
