Beij<strong>in</strong>g television <strong>in</strong> which contestants are asked to recite well-known<br />

quotations from Mao on command and to identify the dates, places and<br />

contexts <strong>of</strong> other quotations <strong>of</strong> his. More <strong>of</strong> his posters are be<strong>in</strong>g put up,<br />

and his teach<strong>in</strong>gs are broadcast aga<strong>in</strong> and aga<strong>in</strong> on the radio and television.<br />

Given the scale <strong>of</strong> the propaganda they are subjected to, a large<br />

part <strong>of</strong> the Ch<strong>in</strong>ese people see Mao as a savior, and even feel a k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong><br />

mystical devotion to him. Many <strong>of</strong> them believe that Mao protects them<br />

from accidents, evil and disease. In his book The Sun That Never Sets,<br />

however, the Ch<strong>in</strong>ese <strong>in</strong>vestigative journalist Jia Lusheng underl<strong>in</strong>es<br />

certa<strong>in</strong> other truths. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Jia, <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a's</strong> devotion to Mao reflects a<br />

nostalgia for the days when the country seemed more stable. He writes<br />

that poor leadership, a degenerate society, and the ris<strong>in</strong>g crime rate<br />

have all helped to <strong>in</strong>crease the nostalgia for Mao. A great many Ch<strong>in</strong>ese<br />

imag<strong>in</strong>e that the sun will aga<strong>in</strong> rise over Ch<strong>in</strong>a when Mao's ideology is<br />

translated <strong>in</strong>to life.<br />

As these analyses have shown, Ch<strong>in</strong>a is by no means turn<strong>in</strong>g its<br />

back on communism, and may even be mov<strong>in</strong>g towards an even stricter<br />

form <strong>of</strong> communism with<strong>in</strong> the context <strong>of</strong> an established program.<br />

<strong>Communist</strong> ideology means the oppression <strong>in</strong> <strong>East</strong> <strong>Turkestan</strong> will cont<strong>in</strong>ue.<br />

That is because communist ideology has always been an implacable<br />

foe <strong>of</strong> Muslims and Islam, and will always be so.<br />

THE CHINESE "TERRORISM" DECEPTION<br />

The terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001,<br />

brought with them a new strategic order that would change many balances<br />

<strong>in</strong> the world. The United States began a global war aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

terrorism, which sees that country as its ma<strong>in</strong> target. Some<br />

countries, however, took advantage <strong>of</strong> that struggle and hoped to use it<br />

<strong>Communist</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a’s <strong>Policy</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Oppression</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>East</strong> <strong>Turkestan</strong>
