its own favor, but is also try<strong>in</strong>g to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> control <strong>of</strong> the <strong>East</strong><br />

<strong>Turkestan</strong> economy. The statistics reveal the scale <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a's</strong> repressive<br />

policies: Only ten percent <strong>of</strong> the 200,000 <strong>in</strong>dustrial workers around the<br />

capital, Urumchi, are Uighurs, the rest are Ch<strong>in</strong>ese. Only 10 percent <strong>of</strong><br />

the workers <strong>in</strong> a textile plant near Urumchi are Uighurs. The number <strong>of</strong><br />

Uighurs <strong>in</strong> one textile plant near Kashgar<br />

which employs 12,000 people is only 800. A<br />

tractor factory near Urumchi has 2,100<br />

workers, yet only 13 <strong>of</strong> these are Uighurs.<br />

A new petro-chemical plant was opened <strong>in</strong><br />

the city <strong>of</strong> Poskam <strong>in</strong> 1986, and all <strong>of</strong> the<br />

2,200 workers are Ch<strong>in</strong>ese. 71<br />

ll <strong>of</strong> <strong>East</strong> <strong>Turkestan</strong>'s natural wealth is exploited<br />

by Ch<strong>in</strong>a, and another factor the<br />

local population has to battle with is hunger<br />

and poverty.<br />
