10 million copies <strong>of</strong> a new four-volume edition <strong>of</strong> Mao's collected works<br />

last year, and state-owned film studios have been crank<strong>in</strong>g out docudramas.<br />

The 1991 film Mao Zedong and His Son was calculated to make Mao<br />

appear more human by highlight<strong>in</strong>g an emotional scene <strong>in</strong> which he was<br />

told that his son Mao Any<strong>in</strong>g had just been killed <strong>in</strong> the Korean War by<br />

the Americans. Such efforts to humanize Mao cont<strong>in</strong>ued this year with<br />
