500,000.000 Dirhams. The nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se judgments gave <strong>the</strong> impressi<strong>on</strong> that<br />
political motives were beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>m <strong>and</strong> not just to do justice to <strong>the</strong> pla<strong>in</strong>tiffs 45 .<br />
Because it published a file <strong>on</strong> "Women <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Royal Palace Am<strong>on</strong>g Three K<strong>in</strong>gs", <strong>the</strong><br />
director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> weekly "al-Ayyam" (Days) <strong>and</strong> a journalist work<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> weekly were<br />
sentenced to four years <strong>in</strong> pris<strong>on</strong> with stay <strong>of</strong> executi<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> a f<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> 200,000 Dirhams<br />
each. The same weekly was charged with a f<strong>in</strong>e that reached 120,000 Dirhams <strong>in</strong><br />
ano<strong>the</strong>r case, be<strong>for</strong>e be<strong>in</strong>g doubled dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> appeal stage.<br />
<strong>Law</strong>suits did not stop <strong>the</strong>re. "Le Journal" magaz<strong>in</strong>e was <strong>on</strong>ce aga<strong>in</strong>, through its<br />
publish<strong>in</strong>g director, Abu Bakr al-Jamie, <strong>and</strong> editor-<strong>in</strong>-chief, Fahd al-Iraqi, subject to a<br />
judgment that set a new record <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>e's value (3 milli<strong>on</strong> Dirhams),<br />
follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> doubts raised by <strong>the</strong> magaz<strong>in</strong>e about <strong>the</strong> scientific <strong>in</strong>tegrity <strong>of</strong> a report<br />
<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> Polissario Fr<strong>on</strong>t prepared by a European center. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> same period, <strong>the</strong><br />
weekly "al-Masha'al" (The Torch) was c<strong>on</strong>victed <strong>in</strong> a case related to defamati<strong>on</strong><br />
aga<strong>in</strong>st a <strong>for</strong>eign head <strong>of</strong> state (Algerian President Abdel-Aziz Bou Tafleeqa). The<br />
director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> weekly "al-Baydawi" was <strong>in</strong>terrogated after publish<strong>in</strong>g a headl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>on</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> fr<strong>on</strong>t page <strong>of</strong> his newspaper, say<strong>in</strong>g: "Damn this country!", <strong>in</strong> an attempt to<br />
express <strong>the</strong> rage <strong>of</strong> part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Moroccans vis-à-vis <strong>the</strong>ir country. He was c<strong>on</strong>victed<br />
although <strong>the</strong> newspaper's owner solved <strong>the</strong> problem <strong>and</strong> changed <strong>the</strong> headl<strong>in</strong>e be<strong>for</strong>e<br />
<strong>the</strong> newspaper was distributed. The director <strong>of</strong> "Le Journal" magaz<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> weekly<br />
"al-Masha'al" were also <strong>in</strong>terrogated about <strong>the</strong> same subject <strong>for</strong> republish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
cover <strong>of</strong> "al-Baydawi".<br />
In <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> "M<strong>on</strong>archy is not suitable <strong>for</strong> <strong>Morocco</strong>", <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> accused is <strong>the</strong><br />
director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> "al-Osbooiyyah al-Jadidah" (New Weekly) newspaper <strong>and</strong> two <strong>of</strong> its<br />
journalists, as well as <strong>the</strong> reporter who c<strong>on</strong>ducted <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terview that angered <strong>the</strong><br />
authorities 46 , <strong>the</strong> court has not pr<strong>on</strong>ounced its judgment yet.<br />
The <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pressures that newspapers were subject to dur<strong>in</strong>g this<br />
period is what happened to "Le Journal" magaz<strong>in</strong>e, when some "associati<strong>on</strong>s" staged a<br />
protest be<strong>for</strong>e its headquarters, claim<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> magaz<strong>in</strong>e republished <strong>the</strong> caricatures<br />
that <strong>in</strong>sulted <strong>the</strong> dignified Prophet (Peace be up<strong>on</strong> him). What drew <strong>the</strong> attenti<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />
this protest <strong>and</strong> rendered it a clear attempt to impose c<strong>on</strong>stra<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> magaz<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong><br />
its editorial orientati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> to settle accounts with it is that, <strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong>e h<strong>and</strong>, such protest<br />
was not organized be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong> newspapers which really republished those caricatures<br />
(Moroccan daily "An-Nahar"), but be<strong>for</strong>e "Le Journal" which <strong>on</strong>ly published a very<br />
small photo <strong>of</strong> a pers<strong>on</strong> carry<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> French "Le Soir" newspaper that <strong>in</strong>cluded those<br />
caricatures be<strong>for</strong>e delet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m under pr<strong>in</strong>t. On ano<strong>the</strong>r h<strong>and</strong>, <strong>the</strong> State's <strong>in</strong>volvement<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> organizati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> protest was c<strong>on</strong>firmed. This was revealed by <strong>the</strong> attendance<br />
<strong>of</strong> some deputies <strong>in</strong> Casablanca <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> transportati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> people by buses that bel<strong>on</strong>g<br />
45 In <strong>the</strong> first case, <strong>the</strong> magaz<strong>in</strong>e was sued by parliamentarian Halima al-Assali, who c<strong>on</strong>sidered that<br />
she was subject to libel. In <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d <strong>on</strong>e, it was sued by Thuraya al-Jaaydi, <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> an associati<strong>on</strong><br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> wife <strong>of</strong> a senior <strong>of</strong>ficial <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>of</strong> Interior under <strong>the</strong> term <strong>of</strong> Idris al-Basri. She<br />
c<strong>on</strong>sidered that <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mati<strong>on</strong> published about her management <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> menti<strong>on</strong>ed associati<strong>on</strong> as false.<br />
46 Nadia Yasseen, <strong>the</strong> daughter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> leader <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> unrecognized "Justice <strong>and</strong> Charity" group, stated <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> said story that <strong>the</strong> "m<strong>on</strong>archy was not suitable <strong>for</strong> <strong>Morocco</strong>", c<strong>on</strong>sider<strong>in</strong>g that it was about to<br />
collapse.
