is it to be false?<br />

To lie in watch there and to think on him ?<br />

To weep twixt clock and clock ?<br />

honest indignation, outraged affection, and<br />

anguish were uttered, without a touch of<br />

rant or self-consciousness, in a cry that<br />

pierced the heavens and the listener's heart.<br />

The feminine sweetness and physical del-<br />

icacy of Imogen were shown with true<br />

poetic grace; and among all the lovely<br />

images that the stage has shown, none is,<br />

I think, so appealingly lovely as that of<br />

Miss Neilson's Imogen as, emerging from<br />

her brothers' cave, she made her trem-<br />

bling declaration of hunger and honesty<br />

and her meek yet clear-voiced plea to the<br />

gentleness of the stout strangers.<br />

I must not multiply details, especially as<br />

a difficult and more important attribution<br />

is to be attempted. More than once I have<br />

spoken of Miss Neilson's beauty, and of<br />

the general enthusiasm over that theme.<br />

In truth, her face was not distinguished by<br />
