through a vast gallery, crowded with no-<br />

ble canvases, of which at least a hundred<br />

glow with the beauty and the truth of life,<br />

every one bearing his firm signature.<br />

For many years Mr. Warren was a<br />

most interesting figure in Boston, not only<br />

upon the stage, but upon the streets over<br />

which he took his deliberate and slightly<br />

varied walks. His tall, large, well-formed<br />

figure, and his easy, rather peculiar gait,<br />

which seemed always about to become,<br />

but never quite became, a roll or swagger;<br />

his noble head, with the bright penetrat-<br />

ing eyes and the extraordinarily sensitive<br />

mouth, made equally to utter mirth or<br />

pathos or wisdom, produced the effect of<br />

a unique personality. His manners were<br />

the finest I ever saw in a man. With<br />

actors almost all things seem to be in<br />

extremes, to be of the best or the worst.<br />

The bad manners of " the profession " are<br />

the most intolerable manners in the world.<br />
