All the theatre-going population of Bos-<br />

ton — then about half the population of<br />

Boston—went wild over Dora, a purling<br />

piece, surface-ruffled only by Farmer Al-<br />

len's tyrannical self-will and honest obsti-<br />

nacy, which were presented with heavy-<br />

handed effectiveness by Mr. Robinson. It<br />

was Dora herself, the gentle, persuasive<br />

Dora, the rustic but not rude, the meek<br />

but not insipid, — beautiful, sweet, sound-<br />

hearted to the core, like some perfect fruit<br />

ripened in a sunny nook of an English<br />

garden, — it was this Dora that prevailed<br />

with everybody, in the person of Mrs. F.<br />

S. Chanfrau, whose style was as frank<br />

and unaffected as her face was lovely,<br />

her voice melodious, her manner gracious.<br />

Reread, the last sentence seems to me to<br />

be lightly touched with enthusiasm. But<br />

I decline to qualify or to apologize. Dora<br />

has passed away, and Mrs. Chanfrau has<br />

quitted the stage. Dora had no special<br />
