was fortunate, indeed, to
be the home and workshop of Wil-
liam Warren for the better part of
half a century. His career as an actor cov-
ered exactly fifty years, extending from
1832 to 1882 ; and during the entire period
between 1847 and 1882, except for a sin-
gle break of one year, he was the central
sun of the stock company of the Boston
Museum. Of the modern mode of histri-
onic vagabondage he had no experience,
— no experience, of course, of the mer-
cenary " star " system, which binds the
artist to very numerous repetitions of a
very few plays. When his seventieth birth-
day was celebrated, a little while before
the close of his professional career, the tale
