Selwyn's Theatre and the Robert-<br />

1870 there were only five theatres<br />

in Boston, and the price of the best<br />

reserved seats varied from seventy-<br />

five cents to one dollar. The advance in<br />

public demand for theatrical amusement<br />

in this city may be inferred both from the<br />

present number of our theatres, which is<br />

fifteen, and from the doubling of the charge<br />

for places in houses of the highest grade.<br />

In that year the wave of excitement caused<br />

by the opening of Selwyn's Theatre, after-<br />

wards known as the Globe, was just begin-<br />

ning to subside. The establishment of the<br />

new house had been regarded as a great<br />

event, and the merits of its first three<br />

stock companies — of which Mrs. Chan-<br />
