that she really did read pretty well ; in-<br />

deed, I am sure that she read Tennyson's<br />

Lad}^ Clara Vere de Vere uncommonly<br />

well. But I now perceive that there was<br />

no reason for my speaking of her and the<br />

great Sarah Siddons, her great-grandmo-<br />

ther, in the same breath, or even in the<br />

same week. A little later I received a<br />

punishment which fitted my blunder, when<br />

she essayed acting, and I was obliged to<br />

comment on her performance. Yet that<br />

she could not act does not prove that she<br />

could not read. Many excellent readers<br />

have failed utterly upon the stage; -per<br />

contra^ a few fine actors have not been<br />

acceptable as readers. But if one could<br />

have heard Mrs. Scott-Siddons through<br />

one's eyes, they would have been " worth<br />

all the rest " of the senses, and her playing<br />

would have seemed peerless.<br />

Many of my readers will be surprised<br />

and amused to learn that every decent,<br />
