I.3. Transportation and communications<br />
The national policies for railroads, roads and waterways, as well as the regulation and<br />
inspection of their services, are defined by the Ministry of Transportation <strong>to</strong>gether<br />
with the National Agency for Land Transportation (ANTT), the National Department of<br />
Infrastructure in Transportation (DNIT) and the National Agency for Waterway<br />
Transportation (ANTAQ). Air transportation is regulated and inspected by the National<br />
Agency for Civil Aviation (ANAC), subordinated <strong>to</strong> the Ministry of Defense.<br />
Having an extension of 1,751,862 km (196,093 km of which are paved), the road<br />
network is the most important means of transportation. It accounted for 95% of all<br />
