IV.5.5. International insurance for cargo<br />

Contracting international insurance for cargo is not manda<strong>to</strong>ry for the <strong>Brazil</strong>ian importer,<br />

but, due <strong>to</strong> commercial and financial security reasons, companies tend <strong>to</strong> opt for<br />

insurance and the issuance of the respective policy with <strong>Brazil</strong>ian insurance companies.<br />

Regardless of the means of transportation, the <strong>Brazil</strong>ian importer will usually prefer <strong>to</strong><br />

take out an insurance policy of the House <strong>to</strong> House type. Frequently, extra clauses,<br />

such as Strike or Act of God which cover, respectively, the risks of strikes and natural<br />

disasters,are added <strong>to</strong> the insurance contract.,.<br />

Insurance can be contracted directly from the insurance company, without the<br />

intermediation of a broker, who performs an optional role in the <strong>Brazil</strong>ian market. The<br />

South American exporter must inform the importer, prior <strong>to</strong> the shipment of goods, all<br />

the data related <strong>to</strong> the cargo, so that the insurance company can formalize cargo<br />

coverage, depending on the means of transportation chosen.<br />

It is worth noting that the insurance premium, along with the freight and the FOB<br />

value, comprise the cus<strong>to</strong>ms value that will be used <strong>to</strong> calculate import taxes.<br />

IV.6. Trade promotion<br />

Successful exports depend, <strong>to</strong> a large extent, on successful strategies <strong>to</strong> promote the<br />

products in the <strong>Brazil</strong>ian market, especially when dealing with manufactured goods,<br />

whose quality, brand name and technology, among others, have an important role in<br />

consumer choice. In this context, some relevant information related <strong>to</strong> the most effective<br />

means of trade promotion in the <strong>Brazil</strong>ian market are essential for choosing the right<br />

marketing strategy.<br />

IV.6.1. Trade Fairs and Exhibitions<br />

These are traditionally the most widely known and used means around the world for<br />

efficiently offering foreign products in a target market. Trade fairs and shows of the<br />

most varied products and industries are held in <strong>Brazil</strong> virtually throughout the year,<br />

especially in the larger cities. Here, the foreign exporter can participate either as an<br />

exhibi<strong>to</strong>r or visi<strong>to</strong>r.<br />

The Ministry of External Relations has posted on the Internet, at the website http://<br />

www.braziltradenet.gov.br, an official calendar of the main trade fairs held in the country.<br />

The Annex II <strong>to</strong> this publication has a list of the main events that annually take place<br />

in <strong>Brazil</strong>.<br />
