and a few basic principles shared by the organizations, industries, scientists<br />

and authorities involved. The vision adopted by the <strong>PCR</strong> working group<br />

(TAG3/WG6) <strong>of</strong> CEN is that diagnostic <strong>PCR</strong> will have the same status as<br />

conventional bacteriological culture techniques by the year 2010 (see Fig. 3).<br />

The strategy or long-term plan to achieve that vision is rapid publication <strong>of</strong> a<br />

few basic guidelines. The principles <strong>of</strong> the work will be based on noncommercial<br />

and international effort, including extensive multicenter ring trials, with<br />

the aim <strong>of</strong> providing end-users with nonexclusive protocols. The emphasis in<br />

the strategy is the speed and simplicity <strong>of</strong> the publications, thus avoiding protocols<br />

outdated by the amazing pace <strong>of</strong> technology development in the field <strong>of</strong><br />

molecular diagnostics.
