In 1993 Wei Xiang, a graduate student in robotics at the University<br />

of California at Berkeley, used a mechanical arm attached to an airbrush to<br />

create fifty-two microchip-size playing cards, each featuring a different figure<br />

from the history of computing sciences. One of his professors offered to buy<br />

the deck from him for $15,000, but Wei, who had a particularly cluttered<br />

apartment, lost the cards shortly after bringing them home.<br />

One can only speculate on what the cards would fetch should their sudden<br />

reemergence be announced.<br />
