In 1993 Wei Xiang, a graduate student in robotics at the University
of California at Berkeley, used a mechanical arm attached to an airbrush to
create fifty-two microchip-size playing cards, each featuring a different figure
from the history of computing sciences. One of his professors offered to buy
the deck from him for $15,000, but Wei, who had a particularly cluttered
apartment, lost the cards shortly after bringing them home.
One can only speculate on what the cards would fetch should their sudden
reemergence be announced.
