say—one cannot blame him, because there is simply nothing to discover.
This fellow Dimbledon was done by a real professional.
Immigration’s turned up nothing; we’ve turned up nothing; even
Standage at Thames Valley (he’s quite a good detective, by the way, as
decent and professional as you’d hope to meet) turned up nothing. No
sign of this Soares fellow—nothing in Oxford, nothing in London, nothing
from any of 6’s sneaks and spooks in Armenia, Turkmenistan, or
New York (Dimbledon’s only foreign travel in the last decade)—just
total bloody silence. Phipps even sniffed around the Japanese mafia,
what little there is in London (removal of a finger, apparently, is a
traditional form of self-inflicted atonement among the yakuza) and
found—can you guess?—nothing.
This Dimbledon’s a real puzzler. Oxford don for fifty years, potters
around in gardens for a living, suddenly on the receiving end of the most
professional job Britain’s seen in years. Something doesn’t add up, and
the rub is, we’ll probably never know what it is. And I’m going to assiduously
avoid caring for the next twelve days. I’d advise you to do the same.
He’s gone, Beanie, gone like they all go.
Do let us know if you see any promising third-years, won’t you?
Aubrey’s been pretty thin on the ground in recent years here and in 6,
you know.
Bah humbug & c.,
