To Rector Allham:
Herewith is a note for you to know that the police have completed
their questioning of those who attended the conference and were staying
in Aubrey College Lodging at the time of Dr Dimbledon’s unfortunate
death. It is regretful for me that I should have to tell you that one man
who registered for the conference and picked up his key from me has
seemed to have disappeared. His name is Mr Federico Soares, and I
remember him to be a smallish, dark-haired chap of somewhat medium
build and a complexion belonging to a Spaniard or one from thereabouts.
I do not have his key back, and nobody from the conference has
seen him, or so I am told. I will leave further decisions in this matter for
also extend to you my personal deepest condolences, for I knew Dr Dimbledon
also, but not as well as you did, I am sure.
Thank you,
whose concern for his well-being frequently assumed an overbearing
and smothering character—left him quite unprepared for the shock he
suffered. I trust you will forgive the generalisation here, but the American
tendency to “talk through” problems often results in an obsession of
