For a loud rumor instantly prevailed<br />

That all past strife betwixt thy lord and thee<br />

'Was reconciled. Some kissed the children's hands,<br />

And some their auburn tresses. I with joy<br />

To those apartments where the women dwell<br />

Attended them. Our mistress, the new object<br />

Of homage such as erst to thee was paid,<br />

Ere she beheld thy sons on Jason cast<br />

A look of fond desire : but then she veiled<br />

Her eyes, and turned her pallid cheeks away<br />

Disgusted at their coming, till his voice<br />

Appeased her anger with these gentle words:<br />

" O be not thou inveterate 'gainst thy friends,<br />

But lay aside disdain, thy beauteous face<br />

Turn hither, and let amity for those<br />

Thy husband loves still warm that generous breast.<br />

Accept these gifts, and to thy father sue.<br />

That, for my sake, the exile of my sons<br />

He will remit." Soon as the princess saw<br />

Thy glittering ornaments, she could resist<br />

No longer, but to all her lord's requests<br />

Assented, and before thy sons were gone<br />

Far from the regal mansion with their sire.<br />

The vest, resplendent with a thousand dyes,<br />

Put on, and o'er her loosely floating hair<br />

Placing the golden crown, before the mirror<br />

Her tresses braided, and with smiles surveyed<br />

Th' inanimated semblance of her charms<br />

Then rising from her seat across the palace<br />

Walked with a delicate and graceful step,<br />

In the rich gifts exulting, and oft turned<br />

Enraptured eyes on her own stately neck,<br />

Pveflected to her view : but now a scene<br />

Of horror followed ;<br />

her complexion changed.<br />

And she reeled backward, trembling every limb;<br />

Scarce did her chair receive her as she sunk<br />

In time to save her falling to the ground.<br />

One of her menial train, an aged dame,<br />

Possest with an idea that the wrath<br />

Either of Pan or of some god unknown
