Now we need to discuss the much-debated question of the introduction of<br />

feudalism into Engl<strong>and</strong>, or to be more precise, the introduction of knight-service or<br />

feudal tenure, <strong>and</strong> its relationship to the pre-Conquest situation. For a considerable<br />

part of the twentieth century the ideas of J. H. Round were widely accepted. For<br />

Round, a new system of military tenure — knight-service — was introduced in<br />

Engl<strong>and</strong> quickly after the Conquest by William I. The new system he described was<br />

basically one of l<strong>and</strong> granted in return for the service of a quota of knights. 200<br />

It has become clear <strong>that</strong> <strong>this</strong> view is in need of modification at least. John<br />

Gillingham has argued <strong>that</strong>, although the five-hide system may <strong>have</strong> been one of the<br />

bases of Anglo-Saxon military service, together with the retinues of the earls <strong>and</strong><br />

leading thegns, in practice <strong>this</strong> became a system of quotas. This would mean <strong>that</strong><br />

quotas were not new after 1066, though of course the specific quotas for new<br />
