In general, all the l<strong>and</strong>s <strong>that</strong> Ralph Bainard was given (see Map 3, p. 79)<br />
were probably Thored’s holdings or, in the case of Alwin, of Thored’s commended<br />
man. Thus, in <strong>this</strong> case we see <strong>that</strong> there was some continuity in <strong>this</strong> tenurial<br />
structure between pre- <strong>and</strong> post-Conquest periods. Ralph Bainard’s subtenants, on<br />
the other h<strong>and</strong>, do not show the same continuity. Robert of Blythburgh’s subtenancy<br />
in Henham had been the l<strong>and</strong> of Alwin, who was probably a commended man of<br />
Thored, but the other subtenants in 1086, Anbold <strong>and</strong> William Bainard do not <strong>have</strong><br />
any equivalent before the Conquest.<br />
Unlike Ralph Bainard’s l<strong>and</strong>, the subtenancy Walter de Caen held of Robert<br />
Malet in 1086 (see Map 4, p. 80) provides us with a strong example of discontinuity.<br />
