School of Education only in highly unusual circumstances.<br />
A third attempt to pass an examination<br />
will require the consent of the field of specialization<br />
and approval of the Committee on <strong>Graduate</strong><br />
Degrees, Admissions, and Standards. No fourth<br />
attempt is possible under any circumstances.<br />
After three failures in an examination , the student<br />
must be dropped from the <strong>Graduate</strong> School of<br />
Education at the end of the quarter in which the<br />
third failure occurs.<br />
Each examination application requires the written<br />
approval of the student 's guidance committee<br />
chairperson.<br />
Time to Degree . <strong>Graduate</strong> admission and admission<br />
to the master's program are synonymous.<br />
From graduate admission to completion of required<br />
courses, normal progress is from one to two years<br />
(three to six quarters).<br />
From graduate admission to award of the degree,<br />
normal progress is from one to two years (three to<br />
six quarters).<br />
The Comprehensive Examination may be taken<br />
during the last quarter of coursework, or during a<br />
quarter subsequent to completion of coursework.<br />
500 Series Course Limitations . No 500 series<br />
courses may be applied toward the M.Ed. Degree.<br />
Education course 597 is available to the M.Ed. student,<br />
to be taken on an optional basis. (four units; S/<br />
U grading; may be repeated once.)<br />
Teaching Experience : For some M.Ed. specializations,<br />
teaching experience is required:<br />
Administrative and Policy Studies in Education<br />
Specialization. Students with a valid teaching credential<br />
are preferred.<br />
Bilingual/Cross-Cultural Education Specialization.<br />
Completion of an approved program of professional<br />
preparation leading to a preliminary teaching<br />
credential and classroom experience-as a<br />
teacher or aide-for at least two years, at any level<br />
of schooling , are required.<br />
Curriculum and the Study of Schooling Specialization.<br />
Experience as a practitioner<br />
field is advantageous.<br />

Teaching of Reading Specialization. Completion of an<br />
approved program of professional preparation<br />
designed to meet the needs of the individual preparing<br />
for a mid-level professional position in<br />
schooling or for advanced graduate study ; it is the<br />
appropriate degree to provide professional foundation<br />
study in preparation for the Ed.D. program.<br />
Education 498, Directed Field Experience, is a<br />
requirement for all M .Ed. specializations.<br />
Final course grades are utilized in determining<br />
mastery of content from related courses which are<br />
elected on an individual basis . A minimum grade<br />
point average of 3.0 is required for all elected<br />
related courses serving in fulfillment of M.Ed.<br />
requirements.<br />

The Master of Arts Degree (M.A.)<br />
Admission Requirements.<br />
Requirements .Qualifications for admission to the<br />
program of graduate study in Education for the<br />
Master of Arts degree in addition to the currently<br />
specified University requirements for admission to<br />
the <strong>Graduate</strong> Division are:<br />
a. A minimum total score of 1000 on the combined<br />
Quantitative and Verbal sections of the <strong>Graduate</strong><br />
Record Examination . (NOTE: The Miller Analogies<br />
and Doppelt Mathematical Reasoning Test may be<br />
substituted for the <strong>Graduate</strong> Record Examination;<br />
minimum scores are 48 and 19 respectively.)<br />
b. Acceptance in a particular specialization is<br />
dependent upon the availability of openings in that<br />
study field ; additionally , preference may be given<br />
to applicants with related backgrounds and/or<br />
experience.<br />
Note .Applicants who do not meet the University<br />
minimum grade average (B in upper division and<br />
prior graduate study ) and/or <strong>Graduate</strong> Record<br />
Examination score requirements may be admitted<br />
to the <strong>Graduate</strong> School of Education on the basis of<br />
other indicators of special promise such as relevent<br />
work experience , accomplishments , or public service.<br />
Full documentation of the foregoing in the form<br />
of recommendations and other types of evidence is<br />
essential if these indicators are to be given consideration.<br />
Letters of Recommendation . Letters of recommendation,<br />
while not required, may prove useful in documenting<br />
an applicant ' s qualifications and/or<br />
leading to a preliminary teaching credential and professional experiences.<br />

Instances of suspected infraction of the Academic<br />
Senate regulations regarding classroom honesty<br />

of the University for consideration of disciplinary<br />
proceedings against the student.<br />
Grievances pertaining to policy and procedures of<br />
the School may be formally presented to the Committee<br />
on <strong>Graduate</strong> Degrees, Admissions, and<br />
Standards for decision ; final appeal of any decision<br />
would be to the Dean of the School. Beyond the<br />
School setting , instances of continued complaint<br />
would be referred to the Dean of the <strong>Graduate</strong> Division.<br />
For information regarding specialization offerings,<br />
the prospective student should consult the <strong>Graduate</strong><br />
Adviser . All procedural questions should be<br />
directed to the Office of Student Services . A general<br />
orientation meeting for all advanced degree students<br />
is held each quarter during the registration<br />
period.<br />
Personal Adviser. At the time of admission to the<br />
<strong>Graduate</strong> School of Education , students are<br />
assigned an Academic Adviser within their selected<br />
specialization . This assigned Academic Adviser is<br />
retained throughout the M .A. program unless the<br />
student changes the field of specialization.<br />
Academic Progress. An ongoing evaluation of the<br />
M.A. student 's academic progress is maintained<br />
through the recording of course performance in the<br />
student 's file in the Office of Student Services. The<br />

Overall assessment is made by the student's<br />

orally by the Academic Adviser. Continuing students<br />
should meet with their Academic Adviser<br />
each quarter to plan their program of study for the<br />
subsequent quarter.<br />
Academic Advisers are asked to maintain a record<br />
of all interviews.<br />
Departmental Guidance Committee. The student's<br />
guidance committee, typically, is comprised of the<br />
student's adviser and two additional Education<br />
faculty members. The guidance committee is<br />
selected by the Academic Adviser in consultation<br />
with the student. Formation of the guidance committee<br />
is subsequent to an initial conference of the<br />
student and the <strong>Graduate</strong> Adviser.<br />
Admission to Master ' s Program . Admission to the<br />
Master of Arts degree program is synonymous with<br />
admission to graduate status and to the <strong>Graduate</strong><br />
School of Education. Admissions requirements are<br />
indicated above. No screening examinations (other<br />
than described under Admissions Requirements)<br />
and no specific coursework are required for admission<br />
to the Master of Arts degree program.<br />

In completion of degree requirements, the student<br />
may select one of the three major areas, and further<br />
selects a field of study within the major area for<br />
some specialized preparation and for possible<br />
thesis research.<br />

The applicant is directed to the Education Office of<br />
Student Services for information regarding the<br />
appropriate faculty member(s) to be consulted with<br />
respect to enrollment and research opportunities,<br />
and/or course sequencing in each field of<br />
specialization.<br />
Foreign Language Requirement . There is no<br />
foreign language requirement for the M.A. degree.<br />
Course Requirements . Total number of courses<br />
required for the degree: A minimum of nine upper<br />
division and graduate courses (thirty-six units).<br />
Number of graduate courses required for the<br />
degree: six courses (twenty-four units) in the 200/<br />
500 series; no more than two courses (eight units)<br />
may be in the 500 series.<br />
Required graduate courses: Two courses must be<br />
