A student who fails to pass the review and evaluation<br />

by the M.F.A. comprehensive examination<br />

committee may be reexamined. The number of<br />

reviews will be determined by the committee with<br />

Written and Oral Qualifying Examinations. At the<br />

end of the second quarter of residence, the doctoral<br />

student must submit himself or herself to a<br />

preliminary oral examination to be conducted by a<br />

representative committee of the faculty of his or her<br />

specialization. (The basis of the examination will be<br />

material covered in the required seminars of the<br />

first two quarters.) The committee will review and<br />

test the student's background preparation and<br />

progress to date and determine general fitness to<br />

continue in the doctoral program. This examination<br />

may result in dropping the student from the doctoral<br />

program. The committee may reexamine the<br />

student at a subsequent time to determine fitness to<br />

continue in the program.<br />

Before students in Theater are permitted to take the<br />

Written Qualifying Examination, they must present<br />

a dissertation prospectus to the Division's Ph.D.<br />

committee and undergo a two-hour defense of the<br />

proposal. They may repeat this procedure, if necessary,<br />

until they have the approval of the committee.<br />

After completion of all language and course<br />

requirements, approval of a dissertation prospectus,<br />

and appointment of a dissertation committee,<br />

the student will be required to pass the Written<br />

Qualifying Examination set by the faculty. The<br />

Written Qualifying Examination will be twelve<br />

hours of examination, administered in four-hour<br />

segments during three successive days. The<br />

examination in Theater will consist of a series of<br />

twelve essay questions covering the following<br />

areas: theater history and theory, critical methods,<br />

theatrical production and dramatic literature. The<br />

examination in Motion Picture/Television will consist<br />

of a series of twelve essay questions covering<br />

the following areas: aesthetics and film/television<br />

criticism; history and criticism of major film movements;<br />

special forms of filmic expression.<br />

Students who have been required to take courses<br />

outside the Department of Theater Arts to prepare<br />

them to write their dissertations will be required to<br />

write additional questions covering this outside<br />

preparation. Students who fail parts or the whole of<br />

this examination may be granted by the appropriate<br />

committee the privilege of being reexamined in part<br />

or in whole. After this examination is satisfactorily<br />

passed, the Chairperson of the Department of<br />

Theater Arts recommends the formation of a doctoral<br />

committee ; the committee's members may be<br />

nominated by the candidate, but must be endorsed<br />

by the appropriate Divisional Ph.D. committee. A<br />

change in membership is a formal procedure that<br />

must be endorsed by all members of the doctoral<br />

committee and approved by the Chairperson of the<br />

Department.<br />

After passing the Written Qualifying Examination,<br />

the student will be required to pass the Oral<br />

Qualifying Examination conducted by his/her doctoral<br />

committee . The Oral Qualifying Examination<br />

is open only to the members of the doctoral committee<br />

and the student. The student is advanced to<br />

candidacy only upon satisfactory completion of the<br />

Qualifying Examinations.<br />

A dissertation demonstrating the candidate's ability<br />

to carry out independent and significant inquiry in<br />

an historical , theoretical, or critical field of Theater<br />

Arts is required. Final award of the Ph.D. depends<br />

on satisfactory completion of the dissertation. A<br />

student who has advanced to candidacy for the<br />

degree of Ph.D. in Theater Arts will be awarded the<br />

Candidate in Philosophy Degree (C. Phil.) in accordance<br />

with the normal provisions approved by<br />

the <strong>Graduate</strong> Council.<br />

From graduate admission to award of the Master of<br />

Arts degree, a minimum time period of three quarters<br />

will be necessary for completion of the required<br />

courses, the production requirements, and a thesis.<br />

Students who must engage in part-time employment<br />

for financial support, or who must enroll in<br />

background courses to erase deficiencies should<br />

expect to spend extra quarters on their degree program.<br />

For the M.A. student in Motion Picture/Television:<br />

Normal Progress Toward the Degree: The student<br />

who enters the M.A. program with no deficiencies<br />

in preparation may be able to complete the nine<br />

required courses for the M.A. program in three<br />

quarters. At the end of the third quarter, the student<br />

is eligible to take the M.A. Comprehensive<br />

Examination consisting of two parts: Part I, testing<br />

the student's breadth of knowledge, may be taken<br />

no earlier than the end of the third quarter of residence<br />

or its equivalent and no later than the end of<br />

the fifth quarter of residence or its equivalent.<br />

Failure to comply with this regulation will result in<br />

lapse of status; Part It of the Comprehensive<br />

Examination , the scholarly essay, will generally be<br />

completed in the summer or a quarter subsequent<br />

to that in which the first part of the examination<br />

has been taken. The student with no deficiency in<br />

preparation can complete the program in three<br />

quarters plus a summer or in four quarters of work.<br />

The scholarly essay must be completed and<br />

approved by the Film and Television Studies Committee<br />

no later than two quarters after the student<br />

has completed Part I of the Comprehensive<br />

Examination.<br />

Students who enter the program with deficiencies,<br />

as outlined above, will generally find an additional<br />

quarter or two are required in order to obtain the<br />

film and television production and screenwriting<br />

courses, and/or to complete their preparation in<br />

film history. Maximum residency allowed for the<br />

program is seven quarters.<br />

For the M.F.A. student in Theater:<br />

Normal Progress Toward the Degree: All areas of<br />

specialization, except Directing and the combined<br />

Scenic and Costume Design, involve students in<br />

their specialized areas for a continuous period of<br />

two years (six quarters ) with a minimum course<br />

requirement of eighteen courses (seventy-two<br />

units ). The Directing and Puppetry programs may<br />

require an additional quarter or Summer Session.<br />

The combined Scenic and Costume Design program<br />

involves the students for a full three-year period<br />

(nine quarters). Maximum residency in any M.F.A.<br />

program is ten quarters.<br />
