221B . Non-Neumannian Set Theory . Prerequisites:<br />

course 221A or consent of the instructor. Standard<br />

(so-called Z-F) set theory relies on a principle of<br />

limitations of size as a means of avoiding antinomy.<br />

As this principle was first formulated explicitly as<br />

an axiom of set theory by von Neumann, set theories<br />

in which it fails may appropriately be spoken of<br />

as non-Neumannian. In this course, possibilities in<br />

regard to non-Neumannian set theories will be<br />

explored; proposed axiomatizations and relative<br />

consistency proofs based on the assumed consistency<br />

of Z-F set theory or of Z-F set theory plus a<br />

strong axiom of infinity.<br />
