PART I<br />

<strong>Fetishism</strong>: <strong>The</strong> Master Trope<br />

So that, as rational metaphysics teaches that<br />

man becomes all th<strong>in</strong>gs by underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

them, this imag<strong>in</strong>ative metaphysics shows<br />

that man becomes all th<strong>in</strong>gs by not underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

them; <strong>and</strong> perhaps the latter proposition<br />

is truer than the former, for when man<br />

underst<strong>and</strong>s he extends his m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>and</strong> takes <strong>in</strong><br />

the th<strong>in</strong>gs, but when he does not underst<strong>and</strong><br />

he makes the th<strong>in</strong>gs out of himself <strong>and</strong> becomes<br />

them by transform<strong>in</strong>g himself <strong>in</strong>to<br />

them.<br />
