PLUNDER: THE CRIME OF OUR TIME
“The Crime of Our Time combines Schechter’s signature bold
THE CRIME
OF OUR TIME
WAS THE ECONOMIC CRISIS
“INDEED, CRIMINAL?”
While others blame our economic meltdown on greed and mistakes, Investigative Journalist
and Filmmaker Danny Schechter shows how an ongoing crime built on pervasive subcrime
mortgage fraud, predatory securitization, unchecked leveraging, and phony insurance scams
lost trillions, and caused millions of families their homes and jobs while devastating fi nancial
markets and our economic security. Schechter argues, “We need a jailout, not a bailout.”
DANNY SCHECHTER, “The News Dissector,” has spent decades as a truth teller in the media. He
has worked in print, radio, local news, cable news (CNN and CNBC), network news magazines
(ABC) and as an independent fi lmmaker and TV producer with the award-winning independent
company Globalvision. His fi lm “IN DEBT WE TRUST” (2006) was the fi rst to expose Wall Street’s
connection to subprime loans, predicting the economic crisis that this book investigates.
A graduate of Cornell and the London School of Economics, Danny Schechter was a Nieman
Fellow at Harvard and a multiple Emmy Award winner at ABC News, where he was among the
fi rst to expose the S&L crisis. He is a blogger, editor of Mediachannel.org and author of ten books.
He has reported from 63 countries, and lives in Gotham. He owns no derivatives or tranches.
