Transportation Assessment of the Central & North Coast of BC<br />

from the BC Government as community owned business of the year. The marine<br />

operations division of MDC operates a daily scheduled water taxi services between<br />

the community and Prince Rupert; the one-way adult fare is $5. It also manages<br />

the Tsimshian Storm passenger ferry service for North-Co-Corp. Ferry Services<br />

Ltd., jointly owned by Metlakatla, Gitxaala and Gitga’at First Nations. It is one of<br />

five First Nation owners of Prince Rupert-headquartered TriCorp, which extends<br />

business loans to First Nation members and organizations and delivers business<br />

training programs. MDC owns and operates Seashore Charters Ltd., which offers<br />

Pike Island cultural tours and bear and whale watching trips. It also owns and<br />

operates First Nations Training and Development Centre, Grassy Bay Services Ltd.,<br />

Metlakatla Forestry Corporation, and Northland Marine Sales and Service Ltd.<br />

A daily commute to Prince Rupert for work is almost impossible from Metlakatla<br />

under current conditions so completion of the Tsimshian Access project would<br />

allow Metlakatla residents to secure jobs in Prince Rupert and commute daily to<br />

them.<br />

contracted by school district; West Coast Launch is the current<br />

contract holder<br />

Private/commercial vessel • Two docks for pleasure and commercial fishing boats, operated<br />

by Metlakatla First Nation<br />

Kitkatla is the home community of the Gitxaala First Nation and is located on<br />

Dolphin Island, a small island adjacent to larger Porcher Island. With an<br />

approximate population of 500, the downsizing of the salmon fishing industry and<br />

the downturn in the coastal forest industry coming when the band finally obtained<br />

a timber tenure from the BC Government has led to a very high level of<br />
