Issues and Recommendations<br />
Transportation Assessment of the North and Central Coast of BC<br />
In the course of our research and consultation, we have identified several critical<br />
transportation-related issues, and learned how they affect business, economic<br />
growth, and quality of life for residents. Following are the broad strategic issues<br />
that affect transportation in the LRMP Plan area, as well as some key community<br />
issues. (These are discussed in more detail in the <strong>report</strong>.) Recommendations are<br />
identified for each.<br />
Regional Strategic Issues<br />
► Issue: Aging infrastructure, high transportation costs, and infrequent<br />
service impedes economic development on the Central and North Coast.<br />
Recommendation: Begin lobbying federal and provincial government now for<br />
funding to undertake “shovel-ready” infrastructure projects. Some priority<br />
short-term projects with potential 2009 starts and 2010 finishes are as follows:<br />
• improvements to Kitkatla’s float dock;<br />
• new ferry dock at Aero Point near Prince Rupert;<br />
• larger and safer ferry terminal in Klemtu, and larger docks in Shearwater<br />
and Ocean Falls;<br />
• larger airport terminal and night time runway lights in Bella Bella;<br />
• improvements to Highway 20 between Anahim Lake and Bella Coola Valley,<br />
in particular Heckman Pass;<br />
• implementation of a public bus service from Bella Coola to Williams Lake;<br />
and,<br />
• pedestrian sidewalk or walkway between Nuxalk Subdivision 4 with the<br />
town of Bella Coola.<br />
► Issue: No coastal BC transportation plan exists.<br />
Recommendation #1: Create a Central and North Coast transportation<br />
investment strategy for longer term projects. We recommend that the BC<br />
Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure be asked to spearhead a multistakeholder<br />
coalition in order to strategize on current and future coastal<br />
transportation. Some priority longer-term transportation infrastructure<br />
investments to be addressed in this process will likely include:<br />
• more frequent ferry service to Central Coast communities during the winter<br />
months;<br />
