KITIMAT<br />

Strengths<br />

• Northwest Regional Airport in Terrace a major<br />

regional hub, with two paved landing strips<br />

including a 7,500 ft runway<br />

• full service Flight Service Station (FSS), and<br />

an Instrument <strong>Land</strong>ing System that ensures<br />

99.9 per cent reliability<br />

• Seaplane aerodrome located within<br />

community at Minette Bay to handle small<br />

seaplanes access/egress<br />

• Kitimat Airpark (3,000 ft. all weather runway)<br />

• Scheduled flights available 6 times per day<br />

from Terrace/Kitimat to Vancouver; at least<br />

once daily to Prince George & Smithers<br />

• Charter fixed wing and/or helicopter flights<br />

also available<br />

Opportunities<br />

• Growth in air travel to Terrace/Kitimat due to<br />

industrial activity in the mineral sector and<br />

planning in pipeline projects<br />

• If these projects go ahead, the decline in<br />

population will be reversed as more people<br />

seek work in Kitimat and Terrace – more<br />

demand for air travel<br />

• Fishing, adventure travel will attract more<br />

visitors<br />

Weaknesses<br />

• Expensive to travel to many parts of BC,<br />

because of connections required in Vancouver<br />

or Prince George<br />

• No direct overseas flights available<br />

Threats<br />

• Recent downturn in minerals and oil markets<br />

could stall investment on proposed projects<br />

• Weather conditions during winter reduces<br />

reliability of air travel<br />

• Future rising fuel and other operating costs<br />
