Dutchmen, some <strong>of</strong> whom formerly resided at Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield,<br />

had, accord<strong>in</strong>g to reports <strong>from</strong> Indian sources, brought<br />

them four bushels <strong>of</strong> powder, and promised more. ^ Thus<br />

equipped, a raid upon the town <strong>of</strong> <strong>Northampton</strong> for supplies<br />

was determ<strong>in</strong>ed upon early <strong>in</strong> March, 1G76. This<br />

attack and <strong>its</strong> general results will be described <strong>in</strong> a follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

chapter.<br />

to lead an expedition to Seaconck, a<br />

town near Mt. Hope, to obta<strong>in</strong> a supply. He succeeded <strong>in</strong><br />

his undertak<strong>in</strong>g, but on his return was surprised and captured<br />

by the English. Life and freedom were promised<br />

him provided he would br<strong>in</strong>g his tribe <strong>in</strong>to submission to<br />

the whites. He refused the <strong>of</strong>fer with scorn and was executed<br />

the day after his capture. A portion <strong>of</strong> his band<br />

escaj)ed with the precious seed, and considerable areas <strong>of</strong><br />

land were planted at Northfield and Deerfield.<br />

The <strong>Massachusetts</strong> Dur<strong>in</strong>g the wiuter <strong>of</strong> 167|, James Quannucouncii<br />

send out paquait, a native Indian, and another by<br />

the name <strong>of</strong> Job, were sent <strong>in</strong>to the Indian<br />

country as spies. The <strong>in</strong>formation which they obta<strong>in</strong>ed,<br />

afterwards proved to be correct, but the authorities were<br />

<strong>in</strong> no condition to act immediately upon it ;<br />

consequently<br />

many <strong>of</strong> the eastern towns were attacked and much suffer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ensued. These spies went to the encampment at Wen-<br />

nimisset, and about twenty miles <strong>from</strong> the old fort at<br />

Quabaug, they found three hundred fight<strong>in</strong>g men, with<br />

their women and children. They learned <strong>of</strong> the proposed<br />

raid upon the eastern section <strong>of</strong> the colony, and named the<br />

day <strong>of</strong> the assault upon Lancaster. Quannupaquait made<br />
