Of these, n<strong>in</strong>e were <strong>from</strong> <strong>Northampton</strong>, eight <strong>from</strong> Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield,<br />

fonr <strong>from</strong> Westfield, six <strong>from</strong> Hatfiekl, five <strong>from</strong><br />

Hadley, five <strong>from</strong> Suffield, and three <strong>from</strong> Enfield. No<br />

troops <strong>from</strong> western <strong>Massachusetts</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>ed the Quebec<br />

expedition. Reports <strong>of</strong> Indians near the upper Hamp-<br />

shire towns were so constant that the soldiers <strong>from</strong> this<br />

county were reta<strong>in</strong>ed for home defense. The failure <strong>of</strong> the<br />

expedition aga<strong>in</strong>st Quebec left the frontiers <strong>in</strong> greater peril<br />

than ever. The victorious French and their dusky allies, it<br />

was believed, would retaliate at once upon the outly<strong>in</strong>g <strong>settlement</strong>s<br />

<strong>of</strong> the colonies. Scout<strong>in</strong>g parties were kept <strong>in</strong><br />

the field throughout the year, a garrison was ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed at<br />

Deerfield, and the utmost diligence employed to guard<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st surprise.<br />

were frequent, and the military authorities<br />

were kept constantly on the alert. Reports <strong>of</strong> the enemy<br />

at the falls above Northfield, at Coasset, and at other places<br />

were plenty, and <strong>in</strong> June, Capt. Talcott came up <strong>from</strong> Con-<br />

necticut, with a company <strong>of</strong> horsemen, but he did not rema<strong>in</strong><br />

long. Indians <strong>from</strong> New York were prowl<strong>in</strong>g about<br />

the country, <strong>in</strong>solent and unruly. Two <strong>of</strong> them were<br />

arrested, and one <strong>of</strong> them shot at Deerfield, while attempt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to escape.<br />

killed by the enemy. She furnished the required<br />

quota <strong>of</strong> soldiers, and was ready to meet any emer-<br />

gency. After the controversy concern<strong>in</strong>g military <strong>of</strong>ficers<br />

had been adjusted, the company seems to have been thoroughly<br />

drilled, and when the opportunity came for active<br />

service, made an honorable record. The number <strong>of</strong> soldiers<br />

liable for duty <strong>in</strong> this town, was one hundred twenty-eight.<br />
