Chang<strong>in</strong>g the Course To change Completely tlie course <strong>of</strong> so<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Stream. . large a stream, would to-day be consid-<br />

ered an eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g feat <strong>of</strong> considerable<br />

magnitude. Noth<strong>in</strong>g accurate is known concern<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

topography <strong>of</strong> the meadows at that time. It is evident,<br />

however, that there was much swampy land <strong>in</strong> them, and<br />

that the new channel <strong>of</strong> the river was carried where their<br />

dra<strong>in</strong>age would be most effectual. The town hav<strong>in</strong>g paid<br />

the expense <strong>of</strong> the method already attempted, an effort was<br />

made to br<strong>in</strong>g the burden <strong>of</strong> this proposed scheme upon it<br />

also. Accord<strong>in</strong>gly when the question came before a meet<strong>in</strong>g<br />

held on the G'*" <strong>of</strong> March, 1710, the follow<strong>in</strong>g vote was<br />

passed : —<br />

"TheTowne tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to Consideration A motion made concern<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Turn<strong>in</strong>g the Mill Riuer through the common feild <strong>in</strong> which motion was<br />

set forth the great <strong>in</strong>conuenience and damage done both to the publick<br />

and private by reason <strong>of</strong> the Riuers ouerflow<strong>in</strong>g and so wrong<strong>in</strong>g men's<br />

Land.<br />

"The towne rejected the motion <strong>of</strong> turn<strong>in</strong>g sd Riuer on the Townes<br />

charge : But voted Liberty for those that had their Land damnified to<br />

Tume the Riuer throug the common feild as Aboue said, prouided the<br />

proprietors <strong>of</strong> the damnified Land wil be at the whole charge <strong>of</strong> it."<br />

A Sewer Commis- Havlug reccivcd permission to turn the<br />

signed by Joseph Parsons and others, was<br />

forwarded to the Governor and Council<br />

"Pray<strong>in</strong>g for a Commission <strong>of</strong> Sewers to be grant'' to some discreet<br />

persons as the Law directs for the cutt<strong>in</strong>g out a passage, for the convey<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the Water <strong>of</strong> a small River runn<strong>in</strong>g through the said Meadow<br />

(and <strong>of</strong>ten overfiovdng a considerable part there<strong>of</strong>), <strong>in</strong>to the great River<br />

<strong>of</strong> Connecticut agreeable to a vote <strong>of</strong> the Towna approv<strong>in</strong>g there <strong>of</strong> and<br />

to apportion the charge there <strong>of</strong> accord<strong>in</strong>g to each persons benefit<br />

thereby."<br />

On the 8"' <strong>of</strong> June, the follow<strong>in</strong>g named persons were<br />

appo<strong>in</strong>ted for that service :—<br />

" Samuel Partridge [Hatfield], Aaron Cook & Samuel Porter Esqrs<br />

[Hadley], Ebenezar Pomrey [<strong>Northampton</strong>], John White [Hatfield],<br />

Peter Montague [HadleyJ. & Ebenezar Wright [<strong>Northampton</strong>], Gent"."<br />

"Any four <strong>of</strong> the sd Commiss" to make a valid act where<strong>of</strong> Partridge<br />

or Porter to be one."<br />

Undoubtedly they entered immediately upon the work,<br />

but no m<strong>in</strong>utes are at hand show<strong>in</strong>g when or at what po<strong>in</strong>t<br />

they began.
