worthy an exam<strong>in</strong>ation: "1683, May 2, I let Robert Lyman<br />

have a young cow <strong>of</strong> 3 or 4 years old to discover and<br />

show me and such as I shall take with me where his m<strong>in</strong>eral<br />

matters are." Whatever else Robert Lyman may have<br />

lost or ga<strong>in</strong>ed through his m<strong>in</strong>eral discoveries, he seems at<br />

least to have received a dividend <strong>of</strong> one cow <strong>from</strong> his lead<br />

m<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

Consequently the excitement soon died out, and could not<br />

be substantially revived even by the grant <strong>of</strong> one hundred<br />

acres <strong>of</strong> land.<br />
