The Town Votes<br />

for the re-estabold<br />

form <strong>of</strong> Gov-<br />

<strong>Northampton</strong> elected but one delegate<br />

John K<strong>in</strong>g— probably at a meet<strong>in</strong>g held<br />

May 16, 1689. At the same time a vote <strong>in</strong>ernment.<br />

struct<strong>in</strong>g the delegate, or rather <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to him the op<strong>in</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> his constituents, was passed, as follows<br />

:—<br />

"Voted vnanimoiTsly that y"^ Goven'^ Deputy Goven' and Asistants<br />

well -^rere Chosen and Sworn <strong>in</strong> may <strong>in</strong> y* yeare 1686, should be Cont<strong>in</strong>-<br />

ued <strong>in</strong> or Reastmie their former power for the yeare <strong>in</strong>su<strong>in</strong>g vnlesse<br />

orders come <strong>from</strong> England to the contrary."<br />

There is no further record. Whatever discussion might<br />

have preceded the above action, either among the citizens<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividually, or at the meet<strong>in</strong>g is unknown. There was<br />

practical unanimity <strong>of</strong> sentiment. The people were loyal<br />

and patriotic, ready to acknowledge fealty to the K<strong>in</strong>g, and<br />

equally ready to depose unjust and tyrannical rulers.<br />
