SAW MILL—MINISTERS SALARY—COMMON LANDS.<br />

Prosperity Returns. RELIEVED <strong>of</strong> military pressure, th<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

soon resumed tlieir normal condition <strong>in</strong> the<br />

Connecticut valley. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the next ten years the quiet<br />

avocations <strong>of</strong> peace absorbed the energies <strong>of</strong> the people,<br />

and prosperity once more showered <strong>its</strong> bless<strong>in</strong>gs upon the<br />

land. Everywhere the <strong>in</strong>habitants were <strong>in</strong>dustriously solv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the life problem <strong>of</strong> the hour : —endeavor<strong>in</strong>g to pay<br />

taxes, to "make both ends meet," and to recover the losses<br />

attendant upon the recent disastrous times. In an agricul-<br />

tural community like that <strong>of</strong> <strong>Northampton</strong>, little <strong>of</strong> excit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest or <strong>of</strong> more than ord<strong>in</strong>ary note can be anticipa-<br />

ted. Grave and sober citizens with little beyond the daily<br />

struggle for existence to enter <strong>in</strong>to their lives, do not make<br />

history rapidly, or prom<strong>in</strong>ently mark <strong>its</strong> eras with stirr<strong>in</strong>g-<br />

events. With<strong>in</strong> this period only the usual affairs <strong>of</strong> the<br />

community, such as have already formed the staple <strong>of</strong> this<br />

narrative, come <strong>in</strong>to prom<strong>in</strong>ence, and the monotony <strong>of</strong> the<br />

records is but slightly varied.<br />

Engross Atten- itauts <strong>of</strong> that day have but slight attraction<br />

and are neither valueless nor un<strong>in</strong>structive. As noted year<br />

by year, they serve to portray the character <strong>of</strong> the times<br />

and <strong>in</strong>dicate the general growth and tendency <strong>of</strong> the pub-<br />

lic m<strong>in</strong>d. Everywhere will be noticed the necessity for<br />

economy, as well <strong>in</strong> the conduct <strong>of</strong> municipal affairs as <strong>in</strong><br />

the more m<strong>in</strong>ute details <strong>of</strong> private life. The country had<br />

not yet recovered <strong>from</strong> the f<strong>in</strong>ancial embarrassments occa-
