environmental goals. In addition to<br />
continuous monitoring of environmental<br />
management objectives, <strong>BMW</strong> has specified<br />
minimum technical requirements for all environmentally<br />
relevant areas. Directly involved in the<br />
implementation of the environmental protection<br />
plans, suppliers are required to comply with<br />
international environmental guidelines as well<br />
as with <strong>BMW</strong> procurement regulations. In this<br />
area, special attention is paid to the <strong>BMW</strong><br />
<strong>Group</strong> rules pertaining to the environmental<br />
compatibility of products.<br />
Information promotes involvement<br />
One of the keys to successful implementation<br />
of the environmental management system is<br />
keeping <strong>BMW</strong> employees informed.The workers<br />
have direct access to a pool of comprehensive<br />
information. Environmental topics are addressed<br />
regularly in the <strong>BMW</strong> <strong>Group</strong> newspaper as<br />
well as in the management memos for upperlevel<br />
supervisors and the leaders’ briefing<br />
documentation for team leaders. Special update<br />
leaflets are published for insertion into the<br />
<strong>BMW</strong> Current Factbook (ALex). Information<br />

by experts and available company-wide, the<br />
ZEUS database contains complete information<br />
on environmental as well as occupational<br />
health & safety relevant materials.<br />
The spectrum of environmental information<br />
is supplemented by regular training. Environmental<br />
themes are integrated into the different<br />
seminars offered to <strong>BMW</strong> employees with<br />
special workshops focusing on environmental<br />
and occupational health & safety themes.<br />
Training topics include dangerous material<br />
handling, waste material separation and<br />
recycling, environmental protection regulations,<br />
and other legal restrictions. External contractors<br />
responsible for end-of-life vehicle recycling<br />
receive regular training in two-day workshops<br />
held at the <strong>BMW</strong> recycling and disassembly<br />
center.The goal is to keep participants up to<br />
date on environmental and technical progress<br />
as well as provide information on new laws and<br />
