Halfway around the world and back, daily<br />
The <strong>BMW</strong> plant in the Bavarian town of<br />
Dingolfing, Germany employs around 20,000<br />
workers. Following the takeover of the factory<br />
site from Hans Glas GmbH in 1973, <strong>BMW</strong><br />
developed the property by adding a large<br />
assembly facility. By building in a relatively<br />
remote area, far away from major cities, <strong>BMW</strong><br />
helps counteract urban sprawl. An intelligently<br />
organized bus system with nearly 300 vehicles<br />
transports 14,400 <strong>BMW</strong> employees to and<br />

up to 100 kilometers away.This shuttle service<br />
involves 18 different transportation companies<br />
working in cooperation with <strong>BMW</strong>.The buses<br />
cover a total distance of up to 40,000 kilometers<br />
– halfway around the world and back – daily.<br />
The associated costs of around e10 million<br />
are subsidized by <strong>BMW</strong>.This project not only<br />
enables <strong>BMW</strong> workers to continue living in<br />
their hometowns, it also reduces the amount<br />
of road traffic and contributes to a cleaner<br />
environment.<br />
