Results and Conclusion
A correlation exists between the actual concentration
of the active compound and the resistance to
growth of the test microorganisms. Untreated samples
showed mould infestation after just a few days. Above
a certain concentration of active substance all the samples
prove resistant to mould attack, remaining free
from infestation even after an incubation time of four
weeks. Some of them even show inhibition zones over
a period of two weeks, as in the case of Hormoconis
resinae. Flesh and grain sides show only slight, if any,
differences. Nevertheless, examination of both sides is
urgently recommended.

Summarising, it can be stated that the above updated
method is suitable for testing and evaluating the
mould growth resistance of wet-white.
It should, however, be noted that stability to mould infestation
tested under laboratory conditions does not
represent an absolute guarantee of mould resistance.
Additional conventional countermeasures against
mould infestation are appropriate and advisable.
The results of the round-robin test were presented
at the Annual Meeting of the Association for Tanning
Chemistry and Technology (Verein für Gerberei
Chemie und Technik, VGCT) at ISC in May 2011.
