VI. Lydia Latiirop Backus (1T68), Tj<strong>or</strong>ii at Bozrali,<br />

Conn., 2 Aug., 171)8, fourth daughter of Oliver Backus<br />

and Dice <strong>Hyde</strong> (424), w<strong>as</strong> a great granddaughter of Jabez<br />

<strong>Hyde</strong> (8) of <strong>the</strong> third generation. She m. 11 Dec, 181G,<br />

Gen. Amos Fowler, b. 19 July, 1795, iit Lebanon, Conn.,<br />

son of Capt. Amos Fowler and Rebecca Dewey of Lebanon.<br />

[This Capt. Amos Fowler, b. 19 March, 1758, at Lebanon,<br />

who m. Rebecca Dewey, b. 4 July, 1795, daughter of John<br />

Dewey and Rhoda Orclway, and great granddaughter of<br />

Josiah Dewey, one of <strong>the</strong> <strong>or</strong>ig<strong>in</strong>al settlers of Lebanon, and<br />

Hepzibab Lyman his wife, w<strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> fifth <strong>in</strong> descent from<br />

"William Fowler, <strong>the</strong> first of Milf<strong>or</strong>d, who came to l^ew<br />

Haven with his fixmily from England <strong>in</strong> 1637, <strong>in</strong> company<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Rev. John Davenp<strong>or</strong>t [see No. 4077). This William<br />

Fowler w<strong>as</strong> one of <strong>the</strong> magistrates of <strong>the</strong> colony of<br />

Kew Haven f<strong>or</strong> many years, and d. 25 Jan., 1661, at Milf<strong>or</strong>d.<br />

Capt. William Fowler, his son, b<strong>or</strong>n <strong>in</strong> England<br />

(probably at Isl<strong>in</strong>gton, near London), came to America with<br />

his fa<strong>the</strong>r, and settled at New Haven, where he w<strong>as</strong><br />

admitted to <strong>the</strong> general court <strong>in</strong> 1645, and d. <strong>in</strong> 1682 <strong>or</strong><br />

1683. By his first wife Mary Topp (sister of Gov. Treat's<br />

wife) he had four sons and seven daughters. Mark Fowler<br />

his third son, baptised 17 Jan., 1656, at I^ew Haven, m.<br />

and settled at N"ew Haven ; where he d. <strong>in</strong> 1686, leav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

two sons and one daughter. Capt. John Fowler his eldest<br />

son, b. 1 March, 1681, at ISTew^ Haven removed to Lebanon<br />

about 1702, where he married and settled, and where<br />

he d. 8 May, 1751. By his wafe Sarah, wdio d. <strong>in</strong> 1774, at<br />

<strong>the</strong> age of 88 years, he had three sons and two daughters.<br />

Capt. Dijah Fowler, <strong>the</strong>ir } oungest son, b. 10 ., une,<br />

1717, at Lebanon, m. 18 Dec, 1745, Abigail Bigelow, b.<br />

13 April, 1723, daughter of Serjeant Isaac Bigelow of Colchester,<br />

Conn., and granddaughter of Samuel Bigelow of<br />

Watertown, M<strong>as</strong>s. <strong>The</strong>y settled at Lebanon, where she<br />

d. 9 June, 1796, and he d. 14 Dec, 1804. <strong>The</strong>y had seven<br />

children b<strong>or</strong>n at Lebanon, all of wdiom married and had<br />

families. Capt. Amos Fowler, who m. Rebecca Dewey,<br />

w<strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir youngest child. He w<strong>as</strong> a non-commissioned<br />

oflicer <strong>in</strong> W<strong>as</strong>h<strong>in</strong>gton's life guards, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> army of <strong>the</strong> revolution.<br />

He d. 30 Nov., 1837, at Lebanon, and had twelve<br />

children, to wit : Clarissa, Avho m. Ozi<strong>as</strong> Williams of
