1856, Gerrard Gibbons Pitcher, b. 18 Juue, 1821, son of
Daniel Pitcher of Lebanon, Conn.
VI. Lydia Latiirop Backus (1T68), Tjorii at Bozrali,
Conn., 2 Aug., 171)8, fourth daughter of Oliver Backus
and Dice Hyde (424), was a great granddaughter of Jabez
Hyde (8) of the third generation. She m. 11 Dec, 181G,
Gen. Amos Fowler, b. 19 July, 1795, iit Lebanon, Conn.,
son of Capt. Amos Fowler and Rebecca Dewey of Lebanon.
[This Capt. Amos Fowler, b. 19 March, 1758, at Lebanon,
who m. Rebecca Dewey, b. 4 July, 1795, daughter of John
Dewey and Rhoda Orclway, and great granddaughter of
Josiah Dewey, one of the original settlers of Lebanon, and
Hepzibab Lyman his wife, was the fifth in descent from
"William Fowler, the first of Milford, who came to l^ew
Haven with his fixmily from England in 1637, in company
with the Rev. John Davenport [see No. 4077). This William
Fowler was one of the magistrates of the colony of
Kew Haven for many years, and d. 25 Jan., 1661, at Milford.
Capt. William Fowler, his son, born in England
(probably at Islington, near London), came to America with
his father, and settled at New Haven, where he was
admitted to the general court in 1645, and d. in 1682 or
1683. By his first wife Mary Topp (sister of Gov. Treat's
wife) he had four sons and seven daughters. Mark Fowler
his third son, baptised 17 Jan., 1656, at I^ew Haven, m.
and settled at N"ew Haven ; where he d. in 1686, leaving
two sons and one daughter. Capt. John Fowler his eldest
son, b. 1 March, 1681, at ISTew^ Haven removed to Lebanon
about 1702, where he married and settled, and where
he d. 8 May, 1751. By his wafe Sarah, wdio d. in 1774, at
the age of 88 years, he had three sons and two daughters.
Capt. Dijah Fowler, their } oungest son, b. 10 ., une,
1717, at Lebanon, m. 18 Dec, 1745, Abigail Bigelow, b.
13 April, 1723, daughter of Serjeant Isaac Bigelow of Colchester,
Conn., and granddaughter of Samuel Bigelow of
Watertown, Mass. They settled at Lebanon, where she
d. 9 June, 1796, and he d. 14 Dec, 1804. They had seven
children born at Lebanon, all of wdiom married and had
families. Capt. Amos Fowler, who m. Rebecca Dewey,
was their youngest child. He was a non-commissioned
oflicer in Washington's life guards, in the army of the revolution.
He d. 30 Nov., 1837, at Lebanon, and had twelve
