1754, eldest daughter of Capt. Enoch L<strong>or</strong>d (436) and<br />

Hepzibah Marv<strong>in</strong>, w<strong>as</strong> a great granddaughter of Elizabeth<br />

<strong>Hyde</strong> (9) of <strong>the</strong> third generation. She m. 1 Sept., 1774,<br />

Capt. Stephen Johnson, b. 22 Feb., 1753, at Lyme, second<br />

son of <strong>the</strong> Rev. Stephen Johnson of Lyme, by his first<br />

wife, Elizabeth Diodate.<br />

[<strong>The</strong> Rev. Stephen Johnson, b. May, 1724, at Newark,<br />

]Sr. J., w<strong>as</strong> son of N"atlianiel Johnson, Esq., aud Sarah<br />

Ogden of Newark. He graduated at Yale, 1743, and w<strong>as</strong> a<br />

Congregational clergyman. He m. 26 July, 1744, Elizabeth<br />

Diodate, b. 11 July, 1722, at New Haven, eldest<br />

daughter of William Diodate and Elizabeth, his wife.<br />

This William Diodate w<strong>as</strong> a descendant <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fourth<br />

generation of <strong>the</strong> Rev. John Diodate of Geneva, <strong>in</strong><br />

Switzerland, <strong>in</strong> whose family John Milton lived when he<br />

w<strong>as</strong> <strong>in</strong> Geneva. <strong>The</strong> Rev. John Diodate w<strong>as</strong> b. about<br />

1579, at Lucca, w<strong>as</strong> profess<strong>or</strong> of div<strong>in</strong>ity at Geneva, and<br />

w<strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> auth<strong>or</strong> of a large volume of commentaries upon<br />

an English translation of which commentaries<br />

<strong>the</strong> Bible ;<br />

w<strong>as</strong> published <strong>in</strong> 1651, conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a likeness of <strong>the</strong> venerable<br />

auth<strong>or</strong>. <strong>The</strong> Rev. Stephen Johnson w<strong>as</strong> settled <strong>as</strong><br />

m<strong>in</strong>ister of Lyme, 10 Dec, 1746, where his wife d. 2 May,<br />

1761. He <strong>the</strong>n m. 1 Dec, 1762, Mary Blague of Saybrook,<br />

who d. 10 Dec, 1772. He afterwards married a<br />

third wife by <strong>the</strong> name of Leverett, and d. 8 Nov., 1786,<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 63d year of his age, and <strong>the</strong> 40th year of his<br />

m<strong>in</strong>istry. At <strong>the</strong> request of his friend and parishioner,<br />

John McCurdy of Lyme, he wrote a series of articles <strong>in</strong><br />

opposition to <strong>the</strong> stamp act, which <strong>the</strong> latter caused to be<br />

published <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Connecticut Gazette, whicli aroused <strong>the</strong> spirit<br />

of <strong>the</strong> country aga<strong>in</strong>st British aggressions ; which spirit<br />

at length broke out <strong>in</strong> an armed resistance. And when<br />

Boston became <strong>the</strong> seat of war <strong>in</strong> 1775, this patriotic<br />

m<strong>in</strong>ister went <strong>the</strong>re <strong>in</strong> person, <strong>as</strong> chapla<strong>in</strong> to <strong>the</strong> American<br />

troops. He had by his first wife six children : 1. Diodate,<br />

b. 29 July, 1745, graduated at Yale, 1764, and w<strong>as</strong><br />

a tut<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong>re, and a clergyman at Mill<strong>in</strong>gton, and d. 1773,<br />

s. p. 2. Sarah, b. 29 Jan., 1748, who m. Deacon John<br />
