Joseph Noj^es, b. 7 Sept., 1758, at Lyme, second son of<br />

Jndge William ISToyes and Eunice Marv<strong>in</strong>.<br />

[Judo;e William iTojes w<strong>as</strong> a son of Moses N'oj^es and<br />

Mary Ely of Lyme, and w<strong>as</strong> a grandson of <strong>the</strong> Rev.<br />

Moses Noyes, <strong>the</strong> first m<strong>in</strong>ister of Lyme, and liuth<br />

Picket, his wife. <strong>The</strong> Rev. Moses J^oyes, b. 6 Dec,<br />

1643, at N"ewbmy, M<strong>as</strong>s., w<strong>as</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>r of <strong>the</strong> Rev. James<br />

IToyes, <strong>the</strong> first m<strong>in</strong>ister of Ston<strong>in</strong>gton [see No. 5313),<br />

and w<strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> third son of <strong>the</strong> Rev. James E"oyes of Newbury,<br />

M<strong>as</strong>s., and Sarah Brown, who were m. <strong>in</strong> 1634, <strong>in</strong><br />

England, and came to America <strong>the</strong> same year. <strong>The</strong> Rev.<br />

Moses Noyes graduated at Harvard, 1659, m. Ruth Picket<br />

of New London, and commenced his m<strong>in</strong>isterial lab<strong>or</strong>s at<br />

Ljnne <strong>in</strong> 1666, and w<strong>as</strong> <strong>or</strong>da<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> first m<strong>in</strong>ister of<br />

<strong>the</strong> regular church, which w<strong>as</strong> f<strong>or</strong>med <strong>the</strong>re <strong>in</strong> 1693. He<br />

d. 10 Nov., 1729, at Lyme, and w<strong>as</strong> buried <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> old<br />

cemetery below <strong>the</strong> hill, where <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g tribute to his<br />

mem<strong>or</strong>y is placed upon <strong>the</strong> headstone of his grave.<br />

Joseph Noyes and Jane L<strong>or</strong>d, his wife, settled at Lyme,<br />

where he d. Aug., 1820, and she d. <strong>in</strong> 1843.<br />

his fourth cous<strong>in</strong>, Martha Noyes, b 25 April, 1791, at<br />

Westerly, R. I., second daughter of Col. Thom<strong>as</strong> Noyes and<br />

Lydia Rogers of Westerly (see No. 5313). He w<strong>as</strong> a physician,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>y settled at Lyme, where she died leav<strong>in</strong>g one<br />

son :<br />

1. Dr. John Noyes, who graduated at Yale, 1834, and m.<br />

Anne Colton. She died, leav<strong>in</strong>g two children, and he <strong>the</strong>n<br />

m. a widow Sill.<br />

After <strong>the</strong> death of his first wife. Dr. Richard Noyes m.<br />

25 March, 1830, his fourth cous<strong>in</strong>, D<strong>or</strong>othy Griff<strong>in</strong> (0434),<br />

b. 2 March, 1797, at E<strong>as</strong>t Haddam, fourth daughter of Col.<br />

Josiah Griff<strong>in</strong> (2258) and D<strong>or</strong>othy Gates. <strong>The</strong>y were liv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

at Old Lyme <strong>in</strong> 1858. He had by her four o<strong>the</strong>r children :<br />

5341. Enoch, b. 27 Aug., 1789, at Lyme. He m. 29 June, 1820,<br />

Clarissa Dutton, b. 27 Nov., 1798, at New London, daughter<br />

of Asa Dutton and Clarissa Fitch. <strong>The</strong>y settled at Lyme,<br />

where she d. 6 Aug., 1836. He had by her eight children,<br />

b<strong>or</strong>n at Lyme
