Joseph Noj^es, b. 7 Sept., 1758, at Lyme, second son of
Jndge William ISToyes and Eunice Marvin.
[Judo;e William iTojes was a son of Moses N'oj^es and
Mary Ely of Lyme, and was a grandson of the Rev.
Moses Noyes, the first minister of Lyme, and liuth
Picket, his wife. The Rev. Moses J^oyes, b. 6 Dec,
1643, at N"ewbmy, Mass., was brother of the Rev. James
IToyes, the first minister of Stonington [see No. 5313),
and was the third son of the Rev. James E"oyes of Newbury,
Mass., and Sarah Brown, who were m. in 1634, in
England, and came to America the same year. The Rev.
Moses Noyes graduated at Harvard, 1659, m. Ruth Picket
of New London, and commenced his ministerial labors at
Ljnne in 1666, and was ordained as the first minister of
the regular church, which was formed there in 1693. He
d. 10 Nov., 1729, at Lyme, and was buried in the old
cemetery below the hill, where the following tribute to his
memory is placed upon the headstone of his grave.

Joseph Noyes and Jane Lord, his wife, settled at Lyme,
where he d. Aug., 1820, and she d. in 1843.

5340. Richard, b. 12 Jan., 1787, at Lyme, He m. 31 March, 1814,
his fourth cousin, Martha Noyes, b 25 April, 1791, at
Westerly, R. I., second daughter of Col. Thomas Noyes and
Lydia Rogers of Westerly (see No. 5313). He was a physician,
and they settled at Lyme, where she died leaving one
son :

1. Dr. John Noyes, who graduated at Yale, 1834, and m.
Anne Colton. She died, leaving two children, and he then
m. a widow Sill.
After the death of his first wife. Dr. Richard Noyes m.
25 March, 1830, his fourth cousin, Dorothy Griffin (0434),
b. 2 March, 1797, at East Haddam, fourth daughter of Col.
Josiah Griffin (2258) and Dorothy Gates. They were living
at Old Lyme in 1858. He had by her four other children :

5341. Enoch, b. 27 Aug., 1789, at Lyme. He m. 29 June, 1820,
Clarissa Dutton, b. 27 Nov., 1798, at New London, daughter
of Asa Dutton and Clarissa Fitch. They settled at Lyme,
where she d. 6 Aug., 1836. He had by her eight children,
born at Lyme
