Earle, b. May 5, 1775, in Leicester, Mass. ; m. about
1797, Persis (b. July 4, 1778, in Brookfield, Mass.), dau.
of Abner and Martha (Forbes) Bartlett; resided in
Leicester, and d. Oct. 18, 1807. His widow m. Oct. 21,
1808, Alpheus Smith, of Leicester, by whom she had
issue, and d. December, 1861, in Leicester.
It was much talked of, as a " singular coincidence," that Winthrop
was born on the fifth day of the moon's age, the fifth day of the
week, the fifth day of the fifth month, in the year 1775. He was .
successfully engaged, at the time of his decease, in the manufacture
of machine cards.
