<strong>The</strong> substance of the following sketch is taken from a published<br />

notice of the subject of it.<br />

Samuel Earl is a prominent lawyer of Herkimer, <strong>and</strong> elder<br />

brother of Hon. Robert Earl, of the New York Court of Appeals.<br />

His father, who was a mechanic, settled in Herkimer about the year<br />

181 7, <strong>and</strong> died when Samuel was only seven years of age. His<br />

mother, who was the youngest daughter of Dr. William Petry, of<br />

Revolutionary memory, was thus left with three children to provide<br />

for. <strong>The</strong> sons worked on the farm until they had completed their<br />

education at the common schools <strong>and</strong> in Fairfield academy.<br />

In June, 1842, Samuel entered the law office of Hon. Michael<br />

Hoffman, where he remained until the following winter, when he<br />
