as six or seven took place on a single evening ; <strong>and</strong> frequently from<br />

twenty to thirty per week were held for several successive weeks.<br />

It was incumbent upon Mr. <strong>Earle</strong> to see that proper places for these<br />

meetings were secured ; that, by advertisements, h<strong>and</strong>-bills <strong>and</strong><br />

posters, due notice of them was given ; <strong>and</strong> that a sufficient number<br />

of speakers were always engaged. So far as known, there was no<br />

failure, in these respects, of any meeting called by the Committee of<br />

One Hundred. <strong>The</strong> activity, the labor, <strong>and</strong> the extent of operations<br />

of that committee may be inferred from the fact that its disbursements<br />

amounted to about one hundred <strong>and</strong> fifty thous<strong>and</strong> dollars.<br />

<strong>The</strong> results of the action of the two committees—<strong>and</strong> each of them<br />

contributed largely toward the attainment of those results—were,<br />

that not only the growth of the debt of Philadelphia was stopped,<br />

but effective measures were taken for its gradual diminution, <strong>and</strong> the<br />

government of the city, in all it branches, was greatly improved.<br />
