is Gov. Washburn says, "a man of great integrity <strong>and</strong> benevolence."<br />

was one of the original members of the firm of Pliny <strong>Earle</strong> &<br />

[Brothers, but withdrew from it many years before it was dissolved,<br />

<strong>and</strong>, establishing himself in the same business, prosecuted it exten-<br />

sively <strong>and</strong> successfully until <strong>his</strong> decease. During the last twelve or<br />

fifteen years of <strong>his</strong> life <strong>his</strong> card-setting machines were run by horse-<br />

power. Soon after <strong>his</strong> death, <strong>his</strong> son Timothy sold all the machinery<br />

iof the establishment to <strong>his</strong> cousin Timothy K. <strong>Earle</strong> <strong>and</strong> Reuben<br />

R<strong>and</strong>all, who pursued the business a very short time, under the firm<br />

name of T. K. <strong>Earle</strong> & Co., when Timothy <strong>Earle</strong> repurchased the<br />

nterest of R<strong>and</strong>all. <strong>The</strong> firm was changed to Timothy <strong>Earle</strong> & Co.<br />

<strong>and</strong> so continued for a brief period, until Timothy <strong>Earle</strong> sold <strong>his</strong><br />

nterest to Edward <strong>Earle</strong>, the half-brother of Timothy K. <strong>The</strong><br />

jbrmer name, T. K. <strong>Earle</strong> & Co., was then resumed, <strong>and</strong> was con-<br />

tinued until 1880, when the establishment became the property of a<br />

joint stock company under the title of " <strong>The</strong> T. K. <strong>Earle</strong> Manufac-<br />

turing Company." After Edward <strong>Earle</strong> bought Timothy <strong>Earle</strong>'s<br />
