<strong>Earle</strong>, b. April 21, 1796, in Leicester, Mass. ; m. July,<br />

1820, Mary (b. May 20, 1798; d. Oct. 27, 1886), dau.<br />

of Uriah <strong>and</strong> Phebe (Folger) Hussey, of Nantucket,<br />

Mass. ; resided in Philadelphia, Penn., <strong>and</strong> d. July 14,<br />

1849.<br />

He was educated at a common school <strong>and</strong> at Leicester Academy,<br />

assisted <strong>his</strong> father in business during the last years of <strong>his</strong> minority,<br />

was a few months in the store of <strong>Earle</strong> & Chase, in Worcester, <strong>and</strong><br />

removed, in 181 7, to Philadelphia, where he became one of the firm<br />

of <strong>Earle</strong> & Barker, Commission Merchants for the sale of domestic<br />

goods. <strong>The</strong> firm was afterward changed to <strong>Earle</strong> & Gaskell, <strong>and</strong><br />

the two copartnerships extended over a period of about six years.<br />

But the mercantile business was less agreeable to him than literary,<br />

professional <strong>and</strong> philanthropic pursuits, <strong>and</strong> he was not successful in<br />

it. In 1824 he began the study of the Law, <strong>and</strong> in due time was<br />
