A chaplet for <strong>his</strong> brow had wove.<br />

His guileless breast, with c<strong>and</strong>or fraught,<br />

Ne'er harbored a suspicious thought<br />

Of woman's faith or man's regard ;<br />

And all who sought <strong>his</strong> friendship, shared.<br />

But changing Fortune's adverse gale<br />

Foundered <strong>his</strong> bark of gallant sail,<br />

And he awoke !—" And did I dream f<br />

Are love <strong>and</strong>friendship but a theme<br />

Existing in the poet's brain ?<br />

O ! let me sleep <strong>and</strong> dream again ! "<br />

Such are the thoughts that now possess<br />

His inmost bosom's deep recess,<br />

And o'er <strong>his</strong> face that gloom have spread<br />

Thoughts that impel that measured tread<br />

That step so sullen, timing only<br />

With "waters deep <strong>and</strong> slow <strong>and</strong> lonely."<br />
