interest, the business was continued for a short period in the Silas;<br />

<strong>Earle</strong> factory at Leicester, <strong>and</strong> then removed to Worcester.<br />

Silas <strong>Earle</strong>'s homestead was the farm on Marshall street, in<br />

Leicester, next east of the Town farm. It is now the property of<br />

Thomas Southwick. <strong>The</strong> dwelling-house was built by Silas <strong>Earle</strong>,<br />

in 1806.<br />

He was a prominent <strong>and</strong> active member of the Society of Friends.<br />

He was for many years a director in the Leicester Bank, <strong>and</strong> for<br />

several years its president. In the year 1835 he represented the<br />

town in the lower house of the State Legislature.<br />

In the language of Washburn's History of Leicester, he " was<br />

highly esteemed <strong>and</strong> respected in the town."<br />

<strong>The</strong> children of Silas <strong>and</strong> Rachel (Thornton) <strong>Earle</strong> were<br />

"Died, on the 28th of 12th mo., 1859, Hannah E. [882-1], wife of William<br />

Keese, of Keeseville, Clinton Co., N. Y., in the 64th year of her age; a useful<br />

member of Peru monthly meeting of Friends, having for many years<br />

acceptably filled the station of Elder, <strong>and</strong> other important <strong>and</strong> responsible<br />

duties in the Church. Of a kind <strong>and</strong> benevolent disposition, <strong>and</strong> imbued in a<br />

remarkable manner with the Christian virtue of preferring others to herself,<br />

those in suffering, or in want, always found in her a kind <strong>and</strong> sympathizing<br />

friend."<br />

sive cotton manufactories in Valley Falls.<br />
