His father, George B. <strong>Earle</strong>, was an expressman, <strong>and</strong> for years<br />

managed the business known as <strong>Earle</strong>'s Express. John D. was with<br />

<strong>his</strong> father as messenger for a short time, when the latter sold <strong>his</strong><br />

business to the Adams Express Company, <strong>and</strong> the young man went<br />

into the office of that company. <strong>The</strong> firm of <strong>Earle</strong> & Prew was<br />

formed in 1867; <strong>and</strong> in the year 1870-71, John D. <strong>Earle</strong> was<br />

admitted to partnership, <strong>and</strong> shortly afterward assumed the duties of<br />

treasurer, besides acting as agent at Pawtucket, which positions he<br />

held uninterruptedly until <strong>his</strong> death. Prior to <strong>his</strong> membership in<br />

the firm, <strong>and</strong> before the establishment of the national banking system,<br />

he acted as bank messenger between Providence <strong>and</strong> Boston for ten<br />

or twelve years.
